Colorado Wildland Fire & Incident Management Academy (CWFIMA) is a Non-Profit educational organization under the Upper Arkansas Valley Wildfire Foundation, established 20 years ago, that provides training to states and localities to prepare, respond, recover and mitigate disasters and incidents using the Incident Command System (ICS).

Why do you need to know about ICS? Because it touches everyone! We live in a complex world in which responding to emergencies, from single incidents to large-scale disasters, often requires cooperation among several agencies and individual emergency responders. Regardless of the size of the incident or the number of agencies involved in the response, all incidents require a coordinated effort to ensure an effective response and the efficient, safe use of resources. To accomplish this, training is the cornerstone that bridges all the personnel, agencies and resources into a manageable system.

It all began in 1994 when the Colorado offered its first academy-style training at La Foret Camp in the Black Forest area northeast of Colorado Springs.  A total of 5 courses were offered and approximately 90 people from local agencies attended the 3-day event.  In 1995 we headed to the town of Eagle.  Using various locations in town, 10 courses were provided.  A total of 225 people attended the 5-day event.  In 1996 the name “Colorado Wildfire Academy” was born.  This Academy brought almost 600 people from 12 states, representing all levels of government and private enterprises.  Held in Buena Vista, the event lasted 6 days offering 20 courses.  This Academy marked 5 major changes in operation.

Fifteen years ago, a group of emergency responders from varied response disciplines, founded the Colorado Wildfire Academy and Great Plains Wildfire  College realizing the need to provide National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG), Incident Command System (ICS), and other quality emergency management courses.
